Los Angeles: Filmmaker Danny Boyle has said the third instalment in the ‘28 Years Later’ franchise is currently on the back burner despite a script by Alex Garland being ready.

Boyle, who directed ‘28 Years Later’ and its predecessor ‘28 Days Later ', said the next film is currently awaiting funding.

He added that the project was not a priority at the moment, even though the closing scenes of ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' set up the story for a continuation.

"Alex has written a fantastic script. We just need money. But I hope it will," Boyle said during a special conversation at the BFI London Film Festival.

The director added that Garland, who wrote the scripts for the franchise, was also occupied with a major project, an adaptation of the video game ‘Elden Ring' for A24,  leaving the third film on hold for now.

"So it's on the back burner at the moment," Boyle said.

The franchise began with Boyle's ‘28 Days Later' (2002), a post-apocalyptic horror film starring Cillian Murphy as a man who wakes up in a deserted London after a highly contagious virus triggers a societal collapse.

The story continued with ‘28 Weeks Later' (2007), directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, before Boyle and Garland reunited for ‘28 Years Later ', released in 2025.

The film moved the story forward nearly three decades after the initial outbreak, exploring how survivors had adapted to life in a world ravaged by the virus.

‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple ', the second film in the latest chapter, continued the post-apocalyptic story and left the door open for another instalment.
